The 'Cheap Enough' Trap: A Quality Inspector's View on Consistency, Specialists, and What Actually Fails

I'm not a bowling-ball engineer. I'm not an audio engineer, and I've never shipped a video game. I'm the person who checks other people's work before it reaches customers: a quality/compliance manager for an equipment-focused company. The Surface Problem: It Looked Fine on Paper

The Cost: What Inconsistency Actually Costs

But if they tell you "we're not the best authority on cleaning chemicals—here's who does that better," that's a vendor you can trust on the balls.

Define the tolerances that matter before you order. For bowling balls, that might mean surface finish, RG, differential, and box layout. For headphones, it might be frequency response consistency and driver matching. For a video game, it's a QA pass and a scope plan before you write a line of code. The numbers don't have to be complicated; they just have to exist.

And when someone says "we can do everything," ask to see their quality spec for the one thing you actually need. If they can't show one, they're probably not a specialist. They're just a middleman.

The same goes for any supplier: trust their track record, verify their current spec sheet, and make sure the person you're buying from knows where their expertise ends.
